Near the end of the Industrial Revolution on the 6th of June, 1844,
George Williams started the first YMCA in London.
Twelve young men, whose average age was just 22,
gathered in central London to read the Bible and pray together.
Such prayer groups in many other countries in Europe later took the name YMCA.
It is amazing to think that there are more than
45 million YMCA members in 125 countries around the world.
The Christian mission is still the foundation of the YMCA, along with education,
health, welfare, and international exchange.
In Japan, the Tokyo YMCA was founded in 1880 and the Hiroshima YMCA in 1938. |

YMCA（Young Men's Christian Association）は産業革命末期の1844年6月6日、
ロンドンの青年ジョージ・ウイリアムスとその仲間によって創設されました。
荒廃していた世の中でありながら「若者たちに夢を」という熱い思いを持ちながら聖書を読み、
祈りをともにしていたのです。その彼らの願いはヨーロッパ中に広がり、それらが後に
YMCAと名づけられ、そのグループが今日では世界125の国と地域に4千5百万人もの
会員を抱える団体になったのです。キリスト教に基づく使命が今日でもYMCAを動かし、
教育・健康・福祉・国際交流など幅広い分野に及び、NGO（非政府組織）として
難民救済や国際的なボランティア活動も行っております。
日本では1880年に東京YMCAが創立され、広島YMCAは1938年に創立されました。 |

on love and service manifested in Jesus Christ, AND,
we shall work toward guiding youth and fostering their dreams,
hopes and their spirit to live as they encounter people and nature
as well as different cultures, societies and values. |
